In the sometimes unforgiving landscapes of Eastern Indonesia, Fair Future presents a 12-minute testament—not a work of fiction but a chronicle of the relentless struggle our teams wage against malaria where we operate.
This is not a story woven from fantastical threads but one crafted from the harsh reality of the front lines, where every step is a battle against an unyielding adversary. The scenes you will witness unfold with raw and often brutal honesty, capturing the indomitable spirit of our teams amidst adversity.
Here, the journey is as daunting as the destination. Days meld into weeks as we embed ourselves within these communities, conducting door-to-door inquiries aiming to reach an 87% testing threshold. It’s a mission where modern conveniences are stripped away, operating without electricity or water in Mahu’s sole medical center—a stark reflection of the broader deprivation. Yet, through the support of the Rotary Club Australia and Fair Future’s resolve, taps once dry now flow with life-sustaining water.
The #ZeroMalaria program is a behemoth of precision and efficacy, surpassing our target, an undertaking akin to moving mountains in a landscape where even the hills refuse to budge. It is a strategy that curtails the disease and attacks the very roots of the mortality that stubbornly clings to these lands.
Our film is a visual essay on prevention, where indoor residual spraying, impregnated mosquito nets, and thousands of rapid tests and blood analyses become the lexicon of survival. It’s an intimate education on malaria symptoms, on strategies to escape its grip, and on safeguarding the very fabric of family and community.
For the teams of Fair Future, Kawan Baik, and Sumba Volunteers, this is more than a campaign: it is a life’s vocation. This film, in just twelve minutes, offers a glimpse into the monumental efforts taken to protect tens of thousands in the most ultra-rural regions—a narrative that truly deserves hours to fully convey its scope and impact.
The film comes at a pivotal time: as the rainy season heralds a surge in malaria cases and a rise in deaths, especially among young children and pregnant women. The latter, a deeply affected group, has seen dozens succumb to malaria, compounded by the chronic lack of access to medical care.
The story we present is a call to arms. Alone, our fight is Sisyphean, but together, it can be victorious. We seek volunteers, medical supplies, preventive equipment, financial support, and the essential elements to suppress this scourge. Without collective action, the disease will continue its devastation unchallenged.
Once again, we are the only medical NGOs present in these regions, carrying the torch of a fight far from over.
