Dear friends and partners,
We need to talk about malaria. This isn’t just another issue, but a life-altering challenge that directly affects the people we are committed to serving in Eastern Sumba. In the ultra-rural areas where Fair Future and Kawan Baik operate, malaria isn’t just a disease; it’s a debilitating barrier that hinders community growth and steals futures. Our ZeroMalaria program is the frontline of defense against this scourge, and we’re making strides—but we urgently need more resources as the rainy season approaches, which will bring a sharp rise in malaria cases.
What Is Malaria?
Malaria is not merely a medical term. It’s a ruthless parasite transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. It wreaks havoc on the human body, leading to fever, chills, and severe illness, often causing organ failure and death if not treated rapidly. In Eastern Sumba, where medical facilities are scarce, a malaria diagnosis isn’t just an inconvenience; it’s often a death sentence, especially for children and pregnant women. Access to rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) is essential for swift and effective treatment. But the unavailability of RDTs means that people frequently resort to traditional methods, contributing to high mortality rates.
Why Is It So Crucial?
In Eastern Sumba, malaria doesn’t just affect health—it cripples communities. The illness drains family resources, hampers education, and perpetuates the cycle of poverty. Given the inadequate sanitation and lack of clean water, the environment becomes a breeding ground for malaria-carrying mosquitoes. We are not merely combating a disease; we are fighting against a systemic issue that has been holding back generations. Our ZeroMalaria program is not a pet project; it is our direct challenge to this oppressive obstacle. Since the beginning of 2023, we’ve been diagnosing, treating, educating, and taking massive preventive measures. We have made inroads but we are running low on vital supplies like diagnostic kits, antimalarial medications, treated nets, and indoor residual spray equipment.
How Can You Help?
You have the power to be part of the solution. A donation to the ZeroMalaria program goes directly to equipping our medical teams with the essential tools they need. From rapid diagnostic tests to treated mosquito nets to antimalarial drugs—every contribution plays a vital role in saving lives. We don’t have the luxury of time; the rainy season is weeks away, and we must act now to prevent an increase in malaria cases.
