Preamble: What does Sustainable Development Goals mean in a nutshell for Fair Future? Reduce poverty (and not eradicate it because it is impossible), increase access to basic and primary medical care, improve access to technology and knowledge, reduce the number of undernourished people, be better health, reduce antimicrobial resistance, provide quality education for all, eliminate gender inequalities, reduce all forms of discrimination against women and girls, ensure universal protection and equitable access to clean, non-lethal water at an affordable cost and much more. Our teams on the ground manage to change things, that's obvious, but it takes time.

Allowing everyone to live in good health and promoting the well-being of all at all ages are essential conditions for sustainable development.

Good health is essential if we are to achieve all or part of the Sustainable Development Goals. It just makes us happier and fitter. And since its founding in 2008, Fair Future has been committed – among other things – to helping children lead healthier lives in order to achieve better health.

Hello, this is Alex. How are you doing today? First of all and as usual, I wish you with all my heart to be fit, happy and healthy.

These children from #sdmbinudita, the teams from Fair Future and Kawan Baik Indonesia foundations have seen them all grow, change and have a much better life than when we arrived here in 2019. Together with their parents, we have built this fantastic new school.

Our activities with these more than one hundred and twenty children of the school of #sdmbinudita are part of our daily life; we are no longer so surprised by their presence because they have always been there with us, around us; these kids are part of our everyday life. We are always surprised to see that a trifle amuses them and makes them die of laughter.

Here, as part of the #rebuildmbinudita project, we are innovating by ensuring that all people – especially children and the most vulnerable – have access, among other things, to sufficient food in quantity and quality, throughout the year, thanks to the social cohesion work that we started in 2019.

With these children, we play a lot and share moments of complicity, tenderness and laughter. They make us laugh a lot. And from all of us, we learn things every day. With their five teachers, they all participate in various tasks at school in addition to learning to read and write. Cleaning, gardening, weeding. We believe that quality “education” for all is one of the strongest and most proven pillars of sustainable development.

These children learn to read and write here. The enrollment rate for girls here is also high. Is it because they spend less time on the roads to fetch water? Through Water Connections projects? All of this progress is significant. They gain self-confidence, are more cheerful and play more with each other, more creative, and more spontaneous too. And having water is great fun, right?

But these successes come up against great challenges in developing regions, due to the high level of poverty. Here in the ultra-rural regions of Indonesia, children from the most disadvantaged households are four times less educated than those from the wealthiest households. Similarly, disparities between rural and urban areas also remain high.

We all know these children – and their families – and we call them by their first names. They have a very different life from other children in Indonesia. For them, energy is combined with “hardness and rigour”. But together, we are gradually managing to change a lot of things concerning access to a healthier life for all these families in the ultra-rural areas of eastern Indonesia.

There are more than forty toilets, more than thirty tanks between 3,500 and 25,000 litres, three deep boreholes, more than fifteen kilometres of HDPE pipes that we have buried, and thousands of fittings and taps. See the full Map here.

Testimony and speaking out

Our proximity to communities and families in distress implies a duty to raise awareness to improve their living conditions or their situation.

The Fair Future or Kawan Baik teams may witness violence, injustice, and deliberate acts and must testify.

Testimony is the act of becoming aware, in private or public, of what we see or have seen happening in front of us and by documenting these acts, we report.

Sometimes Fair Future speaks out publicly to highlight a crisis, expose abuses, challenge the diversion of aid, or speak out against policies that restrict access to health care, education, food and all other forms of social protection.

Supply and logistics

Fair Future already helps thousands of families every year but we are struggling!

However, one of our main problems is that we don’t have enough equipment and not enough medicine when we should always have enough material for the work to be done and for the patients to be treated.

In particular for the response to emergencies or in the event of natural disasters, when supplies must be needed within 24 hours.

But also for long-term programs, where a regular supply of equipment and drugs is essential. Fair Future and its teams cannot respond to and deal with all requests due to a lack of resources.

Minimization of risks for everyone

The actions carried out on the ground by the Fair Future and Kawan Baik teams are based solely on needs, regardless of political, economic or other interests.

On the ground but also everywhere else, our teams communicate and dialogue on a daily basis with communities, village authorities and regional governments, to facilitate access and supply to medical care, clean water, and food sufficient for the inhabitants of villages and rural communities.

Fair Future and Kawan Baik do everything possible to minimize the risks for our teams and the villagers to provide them with what they need.

The Fair Future teams

“You never know when it will happen, but it will happen again.”

When a health or social crisis affects one of the regions in which we are already, the Kawan Baik (good friends) of Fair Future who are present will mobilize to assist.

Fair Future, as it often does, can mobilize personnel from the region with whom we often work, including a group of over one hundred volunteers. Specialists can also be sent on-site from one of its logistics bases in Denpasar or Waingapu. Our teams include medical personnel, logisticians, water specialists, and project managers.



Water Connections project in Laindatang Village

This village currently lacks access to water, resulting in widespread illness and malnutrition. Both children and adults are underweight and have insufficient access to food and water.

It is imperative that we take action to provide hundreds of people with access to clean water. The prevalence of diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, and infectious diarrhoea linked to contaminated water sources has taken a significant toll in this region. With the feasibility studies completed, we are ready to work.

In this "Picture of the Day", Fair Future and Kawan Baik medical teams provide medical care to a child most likely affected by Malaria. He is less than two years old and has a fever of 40.6. Her symptoms fit this diagnosis of Malaria. We give him appropriate primary medical care to reduce his fever as quickly as possible. Then he will go for treatment tomorrow at the nearest health centre, more than three hours from the village.

Malaria is a severe public health problem, especially in the ultra-rural and impoverished areas where Fair Future and Kawan Baik Foundations work so hard. Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by the Plasmodium parasite is transmitted to humans through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. Children under five and pregnant women are also particularly vulnerable to Malaria, as their immune systems are less developed and may have more difficulty fighting infection. People suffering from chronic illnesses are also vulnerable (HIV, Hepatitis, malnutrition, etc.)

Ultra-rural and poor areas such as East Sumba are particularly vulnerable to the spread of Malaria due to factors such as lack of water or contaminated water, deplorable housing conditions, lack of access to healthcare health and preventive measures, inadequate sanitation… Moreover, here we do not have antimalarial drugs nor rapid tests to detect the disease. This makes our treatment and prevention work very difficult.
