The Primary Medical Care Initiative is a year-long program providing crucial healthcare services in remote areas with limited medical facilities.
Support the Fair Future Foundation’s mission to provide medical assistance to remote regions in East Sumba, where healthcare is often inaccessible.
The Primary Medical Care initiative planned for 2024 and 2025 is a crucial and ambitious project aimed at providing medical treatment to patients in the remote areas of East Sumba. The program commenced in December 2022 and will continue for 12 months, concluding in September 2025. Its goal is to offer medical care to numerous patients who lack access to adequate health services.
Obtaining medical care is a constant challenge in these areas, with families and children often located hours or days away from the closest health facilities. This situation can lead to minor health issues or injuries becoming life-threatening due to the absence of timely medical attention. The inadequate medical assistance can be attributed to the poor public infrastructure and the remote geographical isolation of these communities.
“In these ultra-rural areas, where healthcare is a distant hope, our Primary Medical Care initiative is a lifeline. Together, we can ensure that no one is left behind, regardless of their location.” – Alex Wettstein, CEO and Founder of Fair Future
The Primary Medical Care initiative launched two years ago, has already demonstrated its effectiveness by treating numerous patients. As we enter the third year, we have enhanced and refined this program, which remains unique globally. Our training empowers ordinary people, primarily women from these ultra-rural areas, to serve as Kawan Sehat Community Health Workers, delivering medical aid in the most remote regions. We are currently expanding our services to 20 out of East Sumba’s 22 districts, delivering personalized and often life-saving medical care to those in greatest need.
Continued support is vital to this life-saving and dignity-preserving program. Fair Future initiated this project on August 27 by donating over CHF 21,000, covering one third of the program’s costs. However, much more needs to be done. Your contribution, no matter how small, will allow us to acquire additional medical equipment and medicines to address the urgent needs of these isolated communities. We sincerely thank all our supporters, notably the RW Foundation and Rotary International, for their ongoing support.
We invite you to carefully consider this proposal and join us in delivering much-needed care to these communities. Even a small contribution can significantly impact someone’s life, and we value your support.

Training and assessment of Primary Medical Care Agents
Since December 2022, the #PrimaryMedicalCare initiative has significantly impacted ultra-rural communities in eastern Indonesia.
At the core of this program are Kawan Sehat health workers, who, with their dedication and commitment, provide unconventional medical care. This program signifies a transformative journey for these communities.
Local community agents develop strong bonds of trust with villagers, allowing them to understand and address their community’s challenges, ensuring acceptance of health practices, and gaining insight into local needs and beliefs. Fair Future teams frequently visit remote villages, demonstrating the organization’s commitment to helping the most vulnerable. These visits provide crucial support through training and resources for healthcare professionals, strengthening their skills and dedication.
Kawan Sehat health workers can enhance their capabilities beyond clinical expertise through continuing education, emphasizing patient communication, complex case management and disease prevention techniques. The program aims to prepare them to face common health problems such as infectious diseases, malnutrition and issues related to water and sanitation.
Ensuring a regular supply of medical equipment and medicines is a crucial part of the program, as it is vital to meeting the urgent healthcare needs in these isolated areas. In many communities, these resources are the only treatment alternatives available. Additionally, the program prioritizes patients’ psychosocial well-being by equipping healthcare professionals with the skills to meet their physical and emotional needs. This comprehensive strategy is crucial to achieving complete and lasting patient recovery.
The #PrimaryMedicalCare campaign is more than just a medical initiative; it is a movement of social transformation. Its goal is to improve accessibility to healthcare and develop local capacity, creating a healthier future for remote communities. This illustrates how dedication, ingenuity, and empathy can inspire meaningful and lasting progress. Our teams, including Alex, have travelled extensively to ultra-rural villages since November last year. During these visits, they met exceptional women who work in healthcare, preserving and saving lives. Due to the critical medical impact of our program, local authorities have recognized its value, and we will expand it further.
