Transforming Lives with Clean Water and Nutrition: Fair Future and Kawan Baik’s Impact in Rural Communities
We empower the poorest regions with healthy eating habits, education, and clean water access for a healthier, sustainable future.
Because local and global educational and food systems have failed to provide the poorest populations with nutritious, balanced, and affordable food, more than 60% of individuals today suffer from malnutrition, nutritional deficiencies, or overweight issues. Junk food is becoming popular in rural areas, leading to food waste, malnutrition, obesity, and environmental degradation.
Fair Future and Kawan Baik are taking action. Access to clean water also means eating healthier by cooking various locally produced foods. To eat healthily, people must learn to differentiate between good and bad foods, diversify beyond rice, and recognize sources of proteins, vitamins, fibres, and other elements of healthy nutrition.
In villages with #WaterConnections and Kawan Sehat projects, clean water means drinking safely, eating better, growing vegetable gardens, and cooking fresh vegetables. For children, it means concentrating at school and learning better. A healthy diet is crucial for education and learning.
The Foundation has created four posters with educational support to print in over 10,000 copies for distribution throughout East Sumba. These posters explain how to eat and live healthily, exercise, sleep better, care for oneself, and keep living spaces clean.
For nearly four months, during phases 2 and 3 of the #WaterConnections program in Laindatang, we cooked for children in their village, around their school. We taught them, their parents, families, and siblings about good nutrition and a healthy diet.
Access to clean water and proper nutrition is not just a basic need; it’s a fundamental human right. At Fair Future, we are committed to empowering communities through education and sustainable solutions.” — Alex Wettstein, CEO and Founder of Fair Future
Our volunteers are in schools, teaching children, parents, and teachers in these impoverished ultra-rural regions how to cook with resources from their gardens, regions, forests, or local markets. Cooking together, eating together, and discussing food have been integral parts of this education.
More than a thousand healthy meals were prepared by our supervisors, volunteers, and village women, who learned about the availability of nutritious foods around their homes.
The weight curve of children is currently under study, with nearly a hundred children being monitored. We are observing and tracking their weight, height, and hygiene. Access to clean water is crucial for helping them gain weight, especially in this region where there is a high prevalence of malnutrition and childhood illnesses caused by the consumption of contaminated water and significant nutritional deficiencies. Our medical teams monitor this with our nutritionist, who regularly teaches lessons to parents and children. Thanks to clean water, a revolution is underway: a better, healthier life with fewer diseases.
Cooking and eating together, drinking healthily, learning about good health, preserving it, and protecting our families and future generations. The future and health of these communities and thousands of children depend on it.
