The emergency medical care access program for children in ultra-rural areas of eastern Indonesia continues and will move to the 2nd phase in early December 2022.
At the end of November, two team members from Fair Future and Kawan Baik foundations will leave by road to join our medico-social base camp in Rumah Kambera. A five-day trip with the Truck of Life, loaded with several hundred kilos of medical equipment
Our teams are thoroughly preparing for the upcoming departure of our socio-medical truck, the Truck of Life. The latter will go far and long to pursue this essential program for Fair Future: Provide access to primary medical care for children in ultra-rural and peripheral areas of eastern Indonesia.
This is via the teachers of the schools who follow four-day training modules and, of course, the book that we have produced, -Kawan Sehat, the healthy friend- we have produced for the children’s attention and all the teachers of these ultra-rural schools: “How to access a healthier life in simple images to understand”.
It is indeed at the end of this month of November that we plan to leave, as soon as we have finished what is a considerable preparation, believe me. It will be a long trip that we have already done before. We are a little forced to take the road because the “Kapal Egon”, the colossal ferry we regularly use from Lembar – Lombok in the direction of Waingapu – East Sumba, is unavailable for a few weeks. And we can’t wait any longer. Therefore, we will leave as we already did in 2021 by road.
You can quickly look at the project’s timeline for phase #2.
A quick reminder of what the “access to primary medical care for children in rural areas” project is.
Residents of rural villages do not have access to primary care, and most medical centres are often several hours’ walk away. The harshness here means that people, especially young children, are often injured. Still, nothing is available to treat them: No doctor, knowledge, medical equipment and, of course, no antiseptic or medicine.
These injuries can lead to the death of a child or an adult if they get worse. We must therefore act quickly. Fair Future has for years empowered schools and families in ultra-rural communities to take action in the event of an accident. Today we are taking another step in this program.
We are appealing from the heart, friends. Fair Future needs you to help us not only to acquire the material that we are missing but also to help us cover the logistics costs related to this humanitarian trip.
The logistics of this trip are in a few lines:
The ferry tickets -we have to change boats four times-, the fuel for the Truck of Life, the food and drinks for the two occupants, the four nights during the trip and the miscellaneous and unforeseen;
We still lack a lot of medical equipment and simple medicines to fill the more than 60 first aid kits that will be placed in the schools of the ultra-rural villages of East Sumba: Each “primary medical kit” includes the following materials:
Various bandages, Sterile gauzes, Pins, Triangular Mitela ©cloths, Latex gloves, Masks, Pliers, Medical scissors, Thermometer, Disinfectant Povidone-Iodine Solution, Disinfectant cloths, Betadine© spray, Antiseptic solution, Antibiotic lotion – Gentamycin©, Bandages for wounds, Hypo-allergenic adhesive tape, Cough and flu medicines, Antihistamines for insect bites or allergies, Analgesic: Paracetamol© or Ibuprofen© 125 mg + 250 mg; Other easy-to-use drugs, Ph-Neutral eye drops, Visine©, and antibiotic eye drops, Cendo© – Xitrol© – Erlamyticin©, Caviplex©, Vitamins for children and adults Imboost© – Supplement aimed at strengthening immunity, medicines for treat Malaria or Dengue, Anti-diarrheal drugs, Medicines to treat ticks, fleas and other parasites, ointment for burns etc…

If you live in the Denpasar area, you can visit us at Rumah Baik, the foundation’s headquarters in Bali. Your visit will be an opportunity to tell you what we lack (medicines, first aid equipment and accessories, games and clothes for children).

You can help us by making a donation in favour of this program here, Kawan, it would be great to be able to fill the Truck of Life completely before departure. We count on you all.
We wish you a beautiful day wherever you are. Remember to take care of yourself and everyone you love. It is the most important.

Here is the road that will follow the “Truck of Life” to reach Sumba East
You can follow us via this interactive map. Along the way, we will regularly post updates about where we are, of the people we meet along the way. All you have to do is click on the image to understand the life of the Truck of Life and the encounters it will have during these few days on the road.
How we deal with and manage injuries in rural areas
In rural eastern Indonesia, families lack access to primary medical care. When a medical emergency occurs, everything becomes very complicated, and the risks are immense.
Getting any medical treatment is a real challenge for an injured or sick person when you live far from everything, have no money, no means of transport and no road leading to the village. We have been working on this program for years now with Fair Future.
What this gallery is about, Kawan?: Program for access to primary medical care for children. Learn to treat an injury before it is fatal. A program for each school/village in the most rural areas of Sumba. The inhabitants of rural villages do not have access to primary care, and most medical centres are often several hours away on foot. The harshness of life here means we often get hurt, but nothing is available to treat ourselves—no doctor, knowledge, medical equipment and, of course, no antiseptic or medicine.
