Lighting Education in Praiwangga with 66 SolarBuddy Lamps for Children and Their Classroom
In an isolated village without power, solar light transforms how children learn and live
In the remote village of Praiwangga, 66 children received their first solar lamps—an act that goes beyond simple illumination. In a region suffering from limited infrastructure—no electricity, running water, and often inadequate sanitation- light is not just a convenience; it becomes a vital resource. During the rainy season, when roads are blocked, such advancements are essential.
Thanks to collaboration with SolarBuddy and Rotary International, each child received a SolarBuddy Junior lamp, while their classroom was fitted with a StudentBuddy lamp to light shared learning spaces. These solar-powered devices are designed to last over five years and are part of the SolarBuddy Tracker for ongoing effectiveness assessment. They deliver a clean, dependable source of light in an area where darkness is widespread and often hampers education and safety.
Supporting this initiative, health education sessions led by Erwin and Ni Luh covered essential topics such as nutrition, sanitation, physical activity, and smoking prevention—a major issue in areas where children often begin smoking early. Meanwhile, Wahyu and Ino shared heartfelt letters from Australian students who assembled the lamps, fostering a global sense of community and solidarity.
Bridget, Adrian and John from Rotary International not only funded the project but also took part, demonstrating a unified front. As children held their lamps high, they gained more than just light; they acquired dignity, safety, and opportunities for extended learning.
This exemplifies the power of collective effort. The initiative reflects the missions of the Fair Future Foundation and Kawan Baik Indonesia, which continually seek to eliminate inequality through resourceful actions.
