SolarBuddy lamps in Lataluri improve child health, safety, and learning
Six hours by 4×4 to light a mountain school and teach healthy habits
After a six-hour journey through difficult terrain, we reached Lataluri with Kawan Baik and our field teams. We saw firsthand that the school lacks basic utilities, such as water and electricity. Here, we introduced SolarBuddy lamps—symbols of hope and safety for children who study and travel long distances home at dusk. These lamps offer more than just light; they help prevent injuries on rocky paths, reveal snakes at night, and allow children to read without the harmful smoke from kerosene lamps.
Special sessions led by Ino, Susanti, and Niluh combined solar technology training with vital health education. Understanding that knowledge is as important as light, we taught hygiene and nutrition using our food pyramid poster. Children learned the importance of hand washing and received bamboo toothbrushes to help establish good dental routines. Our efforts also included teachers and parents to ensure these healthy habits last.
In this joint project, the Fair Future Foundation and Kawan Baik Indonesia highlighted the connection between energy, safety, and disease prevention. While each of the 100 lamps, along with a special Student lamp for the school, is tracked for charging and use, we remain committed to follow-up, based on science and community values. This simple but meaningful effort, carried out with patience and respect, continues to shed light on a brighter future for all children in Lataluri.
We cordially invite all captivated by this story to explore our photo gallery, witness this extraordinary effort, and further engage with our mission through our Instagram account.
