The Fair Future Foundation’s Primary Medical Care program is revolutionizing healthcare access in some of Indonesia’s most isolated and underserved areas.
Central to this initiative are the Kawan Sehat health agents, a committed group of women who serve as the main, and sometimes sole, medical care providers within their communities.
These agents are daily lifesavers in highly remote areas where healthcare access is virtually nonexistent. In the absence of nearby hospitals or doctors and with local health centres, known as Puskesmas, lacking both medical professionals and supplies, these women play a vital role in bridging the gap. Their responsibilities extend beyond offering immediate medical assistance; they also educate their communities on health practices, work to prevent disease spread and provide crucial advice for enhancing overall living conditions.
We are pleased to present a photo gallery featuring 100 remarkable images captured by the agents themselves. These photos vividly depict their daily tasks—caring for the sick, treating injuries, assisting pregnant women, and offering medical support to the elderly. The pictures were taken just weeks after they completed an intensive three-day training session in September to enhance their skills for better community service.
“These women are the heart of rural healthcare, providing life-saving medical care where no one else can reach. Their dedication brings hope and health to forgotten communities.”
— Alex Wettstein, CEO and Founder of Fair Future
These women attend to hundreds, if not thousands, of individuals every year. Their work is remarkable because they go beyond treating patients; they provide family counselling and help prevent illnesses through education and guidance. They serve as lifelines in areas neglected by the healthcare system, ensuring that even the most remote communities can access essential care.
These images provide insight into the daily challenges and triumphs experienced, highlighting the remarkable impact of the Primary Medical Care program in enhancing the lives of those with no other options for medical support.
We cordially invite all captivated by this story to explore our photo gallery, witness this extraordinary effort, and further engage with our mission through our Instagram account.
