Medical Backpacks: How Kawan Sehat Health Workers Deliver Life-Saving Supplies to Thousands in Areas Lacking Medical Access.
Locally crafted from recycled fabric, these bags carry essential medical supplies, improving healthcare access in rural Sumba.
Kawan Sehat health teams on the ground invite you to discover a vital tool we use in the Primary Medical Care program: Our medical backpacks. These backpacks serve as essential health resources for tens of thousands of people living in areas where access to medical services is extremely limited.
This series of thirty photographs highlights the medical bags and backpacks proudly carried by Kawan Sehat health workers. Provided during a three-day training session in Waingapu last September, these bags are much more than just equipment; they symbolize a dedicated commitment to saving lives in Sumba’s remote areas and provide genuine hope for communities that lack essential healthcare services.
Each bag contains over 100 essential medical items, such as disinfectants, bandages, wound care materials, and life-saving medications. They also include educational resources like posters and fabric guides to promote healthy living and prevent infectious diseases like malaria. Furthermore, every bag is equipped with the invaluable Kawan Sehat book—an easy-to-understand guide designed to teach vital health practices starting from the community’s youngest members.
Locally crafted by an artisan using recycled fabric, these bags embody a tale of transformation. The fabric—generously donated by Kevala—was originally used to wrap pottery clay. Now, it protects essential medical supplies, empowering health workers to provide care where it’s needed most. This month alone, Kawan Sehat agents have treated over 500 patients in what is truly a life-saving initiative.
