Villagers Plan and Name Eight Ferrocement Reservoirs to Bring Clean Water to Hambarita
Community-led water infrastructure brings safer access to dozens of homes in East Sumba
In Hambarita, the next stage of the Water Connections programme is poised to make a tangible difference in daily life. Together with local families, we carried out a comprehensive survey to strategically select sites for eight new ferrocement reservoirs, each with a capacity of 4,500 to 5,400 litres. Our simple rule guarantees that each reservoir benefits at least three households or more than fifteen people.
A distinctive feature of this phase is empowering villagers to name each reservoir themselves, symbolising “Water is life.” This personal connection embeds each reservoir into its community’s story, highlighting its identity and hopes for the future.
We have described the detailed construction process, ensuring every family is actively involved, from positioning the reservoirs under roofs for optimal rainwater harvesting to understanding each stage of the build. This approach ensures the process remains entirely community-led, fostering ownership and pride.
By the end of August, these eight reservoirs will be closer than ever to bringing clean water to Hambarita, significantly reducing the need for long, arduous walks and lowering health risks associated with unsafe water sources. This is a collective step towards dignity, better health, and a shared achievement.
