Kawan Sehat Medical Training – 3 Days to Reinforce a Lifeline
A life-saving medical training for 21 rural health agents from the most isolated villages of Southeast Indonesia
For three days in May 2025, Fair Future and Kawan Baik Indonesia gathered 21 health agents—20 women and one man—from the most remote corners of East Sumba for a crucial medical training session. Known as Kawan Sehat, these agents form the sole healthcare network in villages without electricity, roads, clean water, and medical facilities. In these marginalised communities, they treat wounds, diagnose infections, disinfect injuries, measure blood pressure, distribute essential medicines, and implement disease prevention strategies.
This intensive training in Waingapu near Rumah Kambera centred around fifteen updated Primary Medical Care programs. Modules Based on our revised book co-created with Kawan Baik, the curriculum covers crucial topics such as emergency care, infectious disease management, pediatric health, tropical dermatology, and critical management of dehydration, malaria, tuberculosis, dysentery, and asthma.
The training comprised both theoretical and practical components. Health agents engaged in field simulations, reviewed case studies, performed blood testing, and learned the application of new medical tools. They received updated educational materials, including four new visual posters promoting hygiene, nutrition, and disease prevention. Additionally, each health agent restocked their medical backpacks with over 100 essential items—from antibiotics and rehydration salts to gauze, gloves, antiseptics, antipyretics, and malaria tests—all indispensable for their village duties.
Health agents currently attend to nearly 1,000 patients monthly. This training has sharply enhanced their knowledge, honed their diagnostic skills, and reaffirmed their critical presence. The agents also serve as educators, raising community awareness about health risks and the importance of preventive measures.
In isolated areas, the absence of doctors makes these agents indispensable. They provide medical care and protect, educate, and empower entire communities. They are the backbone of survival in regions where formal medical personnel rarely venture, offering hope and health where none is readily available.
By integrating advanced training techniques and culturally relevant education, Fair Future and Kawan Baik Indonesia are fostering a resilient healthcare framework in one of Indonesia’s most challenging terrains.
