Planning the 115m³ Laindatang Water Reservoir with Rotary, Villagers and Trusted Builders
Community-led infrastructure for clean water in one of Indonesia’s most remote regions
Before constructing the 115 m³ reservoir at Laindatang, we took time to communicate the plans, aims, and the detailed process to the community. Working with John from Rotary Australia, as well as Budi and Santo from Gnade in Waingapu, we carefully explained the project details to the families. John, a retired engineer, offered valuable expertise in refining the design and materials, ensuring resilience against the extremely harsh conditions of East Sumba.
Additionally, villagers actively participate in building eight ferrocement reservoirs, each with a capacity of 4,500 to 5,300 litres, to supply water to three or more families. Designed with clever sustainability in mind, the ferrocement reservoirs are ideal in terms of both durability and cost-effectiveness. Each reservoir will have a meaningful name, symbolising ownership and pride. This initiative is not merely a donation; it represents their water, their infrastructure, and their dignity.
We concluded the meeting with a heartfelt group photograph in front of the school, commemorating three years of collaboration —a symbol of unity, progress, and collective resolve.
