Walking with Rotary to Construct Ferro-Cement Tanks and a 115m³ Reservoir for Remote Sumba Villages
Eight 5,350L tanks and one 115,000L reservoir deliver water to over 400 people across two villages.
In the heart of Hambarita’s steep hills, a transformation is underway—driven by the vital element of life: water. John and Adrian from Rotary International stand with us at Fair Future’s latest clean water construction site, where eight ferro-cement tanks have been cleverly erected, each with a capacity of 5,350 litres for collecting rainwater. These tanks provide a sturdy, sustainable answer to a pressing problem faced by rural Indonesia—a severe shortage of clean water.
The quick filling of the first tank within hours of rainfall now benefits many households. This achievement is more than just quenching thirst; it represents eased labour, a decrease in waterborne illnesses, and the reclaiming of valuable time and dignity. The tanks follow a thoughtful plan: handcrafted moulds, solid foundations, and repeatable designs, highlighting the importance of community participation.
As we move to the next construction site, we are greeted by enthusiastic villagers mixing cement and laying stones, witnessing firsthand the transformative impact of having water accessible at home. Within two weeks, another tank will receive its first rain, opening a new chapter for local families who will, for the first time, access clean water without the burden of long journeys.
Fair Future’s innovation goes beyond the physical structures—it represents inclusivity, simplicity, and durability. These tanks can be built with minimal tools, empowering village communities to adopt and replicate this life-changing model.
In Laindatang, our journey leads us to a huge 115,000-litre reservoir now being built, set to serve over 300 residents. Rotary’s role is far from symbolic; it is committed, enduring, and transformative. Together with Fair Future Foundation and Kawan Baik Indonesia, we are creating more than tanks; we are strengthening community resilience and fostering a sustainable future.
The use of ferro-cement, a reputable construction method in Switzerland, is a testament to Swiss expertise in blending durability with affordability. This ensures that even remote communities can benefit from modern engineering principles.
