Solar Electrification SDN Mbajik transforms Haray nights into moments of learning and health.
A community-built solar system powering education, safety, water, and dignity.
In the remote hills of Mahu, east of Sumba, lies the SDN Mbajik School in the village of Haray, an isolated institution that, until recently, was plunged into darkness after sunset. With no roads or electricity, light came only from kerosene lamps or the moon, affecting the daily lives of its eighty students and twelve permanent residents, including teachers and their families.
Recognising this urgent situation, the Fair Future Foundation, in collaboration with Kawan Baik Indonesia and Smart Energy Tech Bali, took on the task of bringing light to this community. With the help of the villagers of Haray, we carried all the necessary equipment by hand over rugged terrain: sixteen solar panels, a 5,000-watt hybrid inverter, and 14,000 watts of robust lithium batteries. For five demanding days, powered by a small generator, we worked tirelessly in the dark to install this innovative technology.
The school’s lighting marked a new era. Teachers can prepare lessons, and children can study after dark. Devices recharge, running water is restored, and the community feels safer. We also brought the internet back. A state-installed BAKTI satellite link for ultra-rural schools was sitting idle because there was no electricity; the petrol generator was broken, fuel was scarce, and it took two to three hours to buy any. With stable solar power, the BAKTI connection now runs daily, restoring free connectivity for learning and coordination in this village.
To mark the occasion, we organised the village’s first-ever movie night, projecting films onto a white screen. The children’s laughter filled the air, and the elders were captivated by the moving images that danced across the school walls.
In Mahu, electricity is more than just a source of light. It signifies regained time, more profound knowledge, assured security, and restored dignity. It is not merely a gift of energy, but an actual means of empowerment —a pivotal moment for an entire community as it begins its journey toward a brighter future.
