Understanding malaria spread through scientific study and community-driven solutions in Umalulu
In Umalulu, Fair Future Foundation lays the foundation for precise malaria control through field research
On April 23rd and 24th in Umalulu, East Sumba, the Fair Future and Kawan Baik Foundations launched a critical phase in the battle against malaria: understanding before acting. In medicine, action without diagnosis is reckless. Applying this fundamental principle, the Malaria Spread Study was initiated to map the real dynamics of infection in a region where 55% of the population recently tested positive.
Umalulu is home to 1,350 people across 400 households, lacking electricity or clean water—conditions that fuel malaria transmission. Our study focuses on three pillars:
A detailed questionnaire with 65 key questions guides data collection, conducted through two methods: the Kawan Against Malaria mobile application, designed for offline use in local languages, and printed backup forms. Each home visit takes about 30 minutes.
Over two days, seven trained field agents received comprehensive equipment—app training, protective gear, instructions, and 300 long-lasting insecticidal nets. This first net distribution in two years marked a major health intervention in Umalulu.
Training included household surveys, environmental mapping, hygiene checks, and technological skills such as GPS data collection. Thanks to our fifth field-specific app, data remains reliable even without internet access, supporting WHO recommendations for mobile health innovations in remote regions.
By July 2025, the full epidemiological report will be published in medical journals, creating a new roadmap for malaria control in Umalulu and similar communities. Coinciding with World Malaria Day, this launch serves as a reminder: behind every data point is a human life, and every targeted action begins with understanding.
