Wai Maringu rainwater tank supplies Hambarita families and safeguards their health
Three rooftops feed a 5,300 litre tank for safer drinking and sanitation.
In Hambarita, the community has come together to transform a simple goal into a dependable system for their everyday needs. The Wai Maringu rainwater tank, with a capacity of 5,300 liters, collects water from three rooftops, ensuring safe pathways for children and caregivers who access the water daily. This initiative, in collaboration with our teams from Fair Future and Kawan Baik Indonesia, has successfully converted brief rainfalls into consistent days of cooking, handwashing, and safe drinking water.
The tank is strategically placed 3 to 17 meters from homes, allowing easy access. Rainwater is directed through first flush diverters, which help remove contaminants, and debris screens that protect the inlet. This system effectively channels stormwater away from footpaths. The tank has a lockable lid for security and easy maintenance. Overflow is managed with a soak pit, which prevents soil erosion and maintains dry footpaths.
Additionally, two coats of exterior paint minimise heat absorption, preserving water quality during dry spells. The pipework and faucet connections are pressure-tested to prevent leaks. Community involvement enhances the system’s integrity: Keba Lamu leads maintenance efforts, and Kaita Lepir donates land to keep the system central to daily life. The project was completed between July 14 and 16, ensuring uniform care across both construction sites. This initiative embodies practical, local, and sustainable health improvements.
