Hambarita rainwater reservoir built for clean daily use
Community-led ferrocement tank with first flush and screened inlets
In the arid landscape of Hambarita, where resources are scarce and access to water is a challenge, Fair Future and Kawan Baik Indonesia have taken another innovative approach to address the community’s water needs with Wai Pandulang—a symbol of sustainability and resilience. This ferrocement rainwater reservoir plays a vital role in transforming daily life, particularly for those who are most in need.
Constructed with precision, Wai Pandulang utilises durable materials such as rebar and wire mesh to create a sturdy yet lightweight structure, double-plastered on both the interior and exterior. This not only ensures its durability but also makes maintenance easier, allowing the community to keep the system operational with minimal effort. The design includes practical features such as screened inlets and a first-flush unit, which effectively remove debris and sediment from rainwater, ensuring the clarity and safety of the stored water.
The strategic placement of foundations resists erosion during storms, while an overflow line safely directs excess water into a soak pit, protecting the community’s pathways. The addition of a lockable hatch provides security and allows caregivers to perform routine checks, maintaining the integrity of the water supply.
This project has also facilitated skills development within the community, as locals contributed to every step of the construction process, transporting materials along narrow pathways, and bonding over shared goals. A dedicated user group now manages the reservoir, conducting regular inspections and maintaining the system with a sense of ownership and pride.
Wai Pandulang—meaning “Rescue Water”—serves as a lifeline, reducing dependence on long journeys or unreliable tankers for access to water. As one of eight reservoirs built in Hambarita, it promotes health, saves time, and improves quality of life by providing easily accessible water for cooking, bathing, and other essential activities.
By significantly enhancing water availability, Fair Future and Kawan Baik Indonesia have empowered the community to thrive even during harsh seasons, fostering sustainable practices that improve both living standards and environmental stewardship. This project stands as a testament to the power of collective action and innovation in addressing vital needs.
