The Preventive Health category focuses on reducing disease and health risks before medical emergencies occur in ultra-rural settings. Articles document disease prevention strategies including hygiene promotion, vaccination support, nutrition, environmental health, and repeated community education. These interventions follow WHO prevention frameworks, emphasizing early action, risk reduction, and behavior change to limit avoidable illness. By strengthening awareness and daily preventive practices, this category shows how prevention remains the most effective, sustainable, and accessible medical intervention where healthcare access is limited.
Climate change does not arrive as a concept in the villages where we work. It arrives as fever, diarrhoea, breathless farmers and dry wells. Each new reservoir, each trained health agent and each malaria test is a practical answer to a crisis that reshapes daily life.
In East Sumba, Kawan Sehat health agents now carry a new tool the HIV prevention poster campaign. Used in homes, schools and small clinics, it explains in simple language how HIV is transmitted, how it is not, and which everyday actions protect families, partners and young people from infection and stigma.
This article reports field dates, methods and impact from East Sumba malaria prevention. Teams worked with Puskesmas, schools and village leaders to align education, IRS, LLINs and diagnostics. Data and costs are fully documented so partners and health services can improve coverage, reduce transmission and replicate what works.
In the heart of East Sumba stands Rumah Kambera—our field base, warehouse, patient center, coordination hub, and training ground. From here, we launch missions that bring health, water, food, and dignity to isolated villages. This is where every solution begins.
The Nutrition and Food Program helps rural families access better food, grow home gardens, and improve their health. Linked to clean water, it tackles malnutrition and supports children’s development. In ultra-rural areas, food is not a given; it’s a survival challenge we face together.
Primary Medical Care brings professional health services to isolated areas of Indonesia. Without clinics or doctors, we train agents, treat the sick, and deliver essential medicine and care, directly to the people.
We distributed 450 malaria mosquito nets across East Sumba villages. Each family received a net, printed guidance, and a sewing kit for repairs. By combining distribution with education, families learned why correct use matters for preventing deadly malaria infections.
Fair Future delivered CHF 12000 in essential medical equipment to RSUD Waingapu, Sumba’s sole public hospital serving nearly 1’000’000 people. This medical equipment donation was based on the real needs expressed by doctors and nurses, ensuring frontline teams receive the tools they truly require.
During our fieldwork in Umalulu for the East Sumba Malaria Prevention Project, rapid diagnostic tests confirmed new positive malaria cases—children, women, and adolescents—despite being outside peak season. Without testing, cases remain invisible. Testing saves lives.
The Kawan Against Malaria program delivers Indoor Residual Spraying malaria operations in East Sumba. Trained teams spray bamboo and wooden homes, surface by surface, to kill mosquitoes and reduce transmission. Each treated house becomes a safer place for children and families.
Fair Future and Kawan Baik Foundations delivers over 40 types of medical equipment to RSUD Waingapu, the only referral hospital for 800000 people in East Sumba. This life-saving donation strengthens neonatal, surgical, diagnostic, and emergency care.
Fair Future and Kawan Baik Indonesia lead a three-month malaria prevention project in East Sumba. The initiative combines lab training, awareness campaigns, indoor spraying, and the distribution of insecticide-treated nets to protect thousands of vulnerable families.
