In the entire island of Sumba, the only public hospital servicing nearly 800,000 people lacks sufficient equipment (to put it mildly) to treat patients. Examples include the absence of essential medical equipment, such as scissors, forceps, stethoscopes, and ventilators for intensive care units, as well as only one defective CIPAP, among others.
Medical staff treat patients with the most basic tools, yet many potentially curable conditions remain untreated, leading to largely preventable deaths.
For weeks, Fair Future and Alex engaged with a group of doctors and nurses to determine their most urgent needs. Together, we compiled a list of essential equipment that could be purchased within a modest budget, approximately CHF 12,000, or IDR 236,000,000. This donation is made possible thanks to the Rotary Club of Mandurah Districts, Western Australia, and Lab Without Walls Inc., Western Australia. All of this is part of the Rotary Sumba Project.
We are currently procuring the equipment listed below. Delivery is scheduled for mid-September 2025. Fair Future and Alex will travel to the local authorities (PEMDA) to deliver the supplies to the hospital team and those in charge.
While this will not solve all issues, it will equip healthcare professionals with vital tools to save lives again, especially children. In a place where lives are lost simply due to a lack of scissors, this effort is crucial.
