“The Day Night Changed” and the Birth of Light in Mbajik
A remote school reveals the transformative power of electricity
The Day Night Changed film shows solar work at Mbajik School.
For five days, we immersed ourselves in Haray to bring to life “The Day Night Changed,” a film depicting the profound impact of electricity reaching Mbajik School for the first time. This captivating story unfolds in a district where over 100 schools are still waiting for the gift of power.
“The Day Night Changed” begins in darkness. At Mbajik School, evenings prematurely halted learning. Teachers arduously prepared lessons by the dim glow of battery lamps, students rushed to complete homework before nightfall, and families coped without the security of reliable light. In collaboration with Smart Energy Tech, the teams from the Fair Future Foundation and Kawan Baik Indonesia braved the challenging conditions. As we navigated rocky paths with solar panels, batteries, and tools, villagers joined us, learning and participating in this remarkable journey. The film captures the essence of raw effort, camaraderie, and skill-sharing that brought light into their lives.
The true magic unfolded when solar energy systems were activated. Classrooms were illuminated, allowing children to study and teachers to prepare lessons with newfound ease. The film also commemorates a historic milestone: the first cinema night in Haray. Entirely powered by the new solar system, a white screen glowed in the courtyard, and moving images filled the night for the first time. Elders and children alike watched in awe, their silence soon giving way to laughter and joy.
Yet this narrative isn’t confined to a single school. Over 100 other schools in East Sumba remain without electricity. This film is an invitation for you to understand the necessity of lighting the way forward. Help us extend the reach of this transformation.
