Healthy Sanitation Construction Program

This photo is from this week. In the regions where we are active, tens of thousands of people cannot use the toilets. Do you know why? Quite simply because they don't have any, because they don't have water and no financial resources to ensure their construction.

The inhabitants, therefore, have no other means than to relieve themselves in fields, bushes, forests, ditches, streets, canals or other open areas. In our view, this is not only an attack on dignity but, above all, enormous risks to the health of families, especially vulnerable people: children, the elderly, pregnant women and the chronically ill. That's why we continue to build healthy sanitary facilities at this time with the "Water Connections" program in East Sumba.

In these few images taken at the end of October 2022, in a village in East Sumba, more than a hundred people have access to this unique water source. A well was dug by hand more than ten years ago and is almost always dry. People have to queue to get a few litres of water that is totally unfit for consumption and dangerous to their health.

The document that we offer you here explains what, all together, we have been doing over the past twelve months as part of this colossal project, Water Connections, Mbinudita Site. As a reminder, this project aims to provide access to drinking water and sanitation to more than 2,500 people whose homes are scattered over nearly 10 hectares.

New complete and healthy sanitary facilities in Ritta, East Sumba

We do not stop; the teams of Fair Future and Kawan Baik foundations have already built, as part of the #waterconnections project, site of #mbinudita #sdmbinudita, more than thirty (30) tanks of more than 6000 litres, six ( 6) complete sanitary facilities including two toilets, showers, laundry washing and water collection point. More than 10,000 meters of PVC pipes have been buried, connecting all these installations. We still have a lot of work to do. It’s intense activity.

The past few weeks have been hectic for all of us here in East Sumba. What a titanic job we are all doing with the help of our friends, the villagers, and members of the rural communities of Mbinudita. The nights are short, and the days are very long and hot too. Imagine, friends, it’s almost 40°, and we work under a blazing sun, which almost anaesthetizes us if we don’t hydrate ourselves enough.

Living without toilets and without water, Fair Future is changing that

We are in the process of completing new clean water tanks and new sanitation facilities in Mbinudita. Our teams are on-site with the help of the entire local community, women, men and children who help us in this work. These infrastructures are made of Ferro-cement, like all the others, with the difference that we give the possibility to the villagers to choose the type of construction. Once again, this type of collaboration works wonders on site because it allows everyone to learn and work.

Building healthy sanitation facilities in rural areas

We are building safe and healthy sanitation facilities for these reasons: Ending defecation in the open rather than in toilets will have “transformational benefits” for the most vulnerable people in East Sumba. Open defecation is when people defecate in the open -for example, in fields, forests, bushes, lakes and rivers rather than toilets. We find that of the hundreds of thousands of people who practice open defecation, 91% live in rural areas. An increase in the population of the regions in which we work leads to a localized increase in open defecation.

Building a 6,500-litre Ferro-cement tank

Building a water storage tank is something simple but complicated at the same time. Working day and sometimes night too, sleeping under challenging conditions, eating little and walking a lot… This is the life of the Fair Future and Kawan Baik teams in the field, every day for months with the support and unconditional support of the villages where we are setting up a new program. We are very involved in all the constructions, be it the reservoirs but also the healthy sanitary installations, the water connections, the filtration systems, and so many other things which, put together, create infrastructures which make them more useful, simpler life.

Clean water and sanitation for a magic trick

For a few months -thanks to the Water Connections program–, the families are feeling healthier, happier and have much more energy. The villagers, who are 100% farmers, are much less sick, and they are in better health. Vegetable gardens are created, and an economy is built. Women and children spend much less time fetching water from wells far from homes. As a result, children spend more time in school, and adults have more time to do things they couldn’t do before. On the other hand, water remains the absolute priority of each of the 250 families of #mbinudita, well before everything else! Today, we are building healthy sanitary facilities for the village and the villagers. Like all other families living in ultra-rural areas, people have never had access to toilets or a place to bathe or do laundry.
